Boat Riding in Cherai: A Backwater Heritage Ride from Ambadis Villas

Boat Riding in Cherai: A Backwater Heritage

Ride from Ambadis Villas

boat ride

There’s a boat ride we send our guests on that most people never hear about until they’re already at Ambadis Villas. It starts a few minutes from the villa, on the quiet canals that run behind Cherai, and by the time it ends, you’ve floated past a 400-year-old synagogue and the palace of a family who once ran the Kingdom of Cochin. No crowds, no rush, just water, coconut trees, and a boatman who’s done this stretch more times than he can count.

How the ride actually goes

You start close to the property, so there’s no long drive to some jetty first. The first half hour is pure Cherai narrow backwater canals, small country boats going the other way, fish farms along the bank, kids waving from the shore. It’s the kind of stretch where nobody’s talking much because there’s not much to say, you just watch the coconut trees go by.

Then the boat turns toward Paravur, and this is where the trip changes character. You dock near the old Paravur Synagogue the Kerala Jews History Museum, as it’s called now. The building you see today goes back to 1615-16, though the story goes it was rebuilt over a much older synagogue that stood on the same spot.

It’s been through a lot  Portuguese attacks, damage during Tipu Sultan’s campaigns, decades of neglect after most of Kerala’s Jewish community left for Israel and it’s been brought back each time. Walk through the padippura gateway, look up at the women’s gallery, and you’re standing in one of the largest surviving synagogues in the state. There are guides on site who’ll tell you more than any blog post can.

A short ride further is the Paliam Kottaram in Chendamangalam the old residence of the Paliath Achans, who served as hereditary Prime Ministers to the Cochin royal family. The Dutch rebuilt this palace in the 1600s as a thank-you, after the Paliath Achan helped them fight off the Portuguese.

It’s a museum now, run under the Muziris Heritage Project, and it’s one of those places that photographs don’t really do justice.

If you’ve got the time and the boatman’s up for it, there are a couple of worthwhile extensions the smaller Chendamangalam Synagogue nearby, and Kottayil Kovilakam, a small hillock where a temple, a church, a mosque, and a synagogue all sit within a kilometre of each other. That’s not a coincidence you find just anywhere in India. On the way back, you’ll pass mangrove patches and a couple of Chinese fishing nets worth a photo stop.

When to go

Early morning, before 9, is calm and cool and the light on the water is worth getting up for. Late afternoon, around 4 to 5:30, gives you a proper backwater sunset on the return leg. Either works depends on whether you’re a morning person or not.

Who it’s for

It’s an easy, seated boat ride nothing physically demanding. Works fine for couples, families with kids, and older guests too. Life jackets and an experienced boatman are part of it, no separate arrangement needed.

How to book it

If you’re staying with us, just mention it at check-in or message us on WhatsApp beforehand and we’ll build it into your stay. It pairs well with a slow morning by the pool afterward, or a beach evening once you’re back.
